Love of baked beans

Amanda brought over baked beans for dinner one night about 6 weeks ago.  Ever since, all of us have been on a baked bean kick.  They are so good.  I'm not a side person; I like my main dish and maybe a roll. But I made beans to go with my sandwhich Sunday at lunch.  I made a side dish!

And they were SO good!

Jade's Wedding

We enjoyed Jade & Eric's wedding this weekend.  She was a beautiful bride and he was glowing as she came down the aisle.  They are such a great couple!  Brian and I were lucky enough to be involved, taking the engagement & bridal pictures for her and doing the flowers for the big day.  The night of, we just enjoyed with their families and had a blast on the dance floor. Check FB for the dancing photo's, too many to share on here.  But we also got the enjoy time with some great friends!

Valerie, Megan, Melanie and I

Melanie and Valerie dancing at the table!

Courtney & Mel are about a week apart - and one having a girl and one having a boy!

Me, Megan & Jade right before her and Eric headed out!

I'm sure they are having a wonderful time on their cruise!  And sad that Megan & I couldn't escape to the beach via Jade's luggage...

Thanks for sharing your special day!

China Glaze

Last week I went to Beauty Brands the annual liter sale.  I picked up 2 purple nail polishes because I wanted one and China Glaze was buy one get one.  And I have found a new favorite nail polish!  I am normally a OPI girl, they just have great colors.  On my toes, OPI works great.  On my hands, OPI cracks after about 16 hours.  So for the most part I leave my hands colorless and just stick to toes.  But I love color on my hands!  So I painted with the light purple last Sunday, toes & fingers.  Wed I added a coat to my hands, but they hadn't chipped or cracked yet and I was highly impressed but still skeptical.  On Sat. I removed it because I was going to a wedding and color didn't match my dress -- not because it was coming off!!  ummm...  WOW!!!  We had to go back today to get something for Brian and I went ahead and took advantage of the sale again, getting a pink and a really light silver with glitter.  I think I'm going to go pink this week, and am so excited at the idea of only having to paint once a week!!

This is a Coach purse

Walking through Saks Fifth Avenue, and what do I find?  A clearance table of purses; sad purses looking for a new home that would care and love them.  And in that table was this adorable Coach tote!  It was love and the tote and I were immediately attached.  It whimpered at the thought of me putting it back down in the clearance bin.  Nothing this beautiful should ever be on clearance; but I reminded it that of all places Saks is a no kill and we would find her a home. Brian rolled his eyes and pulled out the Amex.  I was just glad to be able to give this beautiful bag a home; there is always room in our home for another handbag.  We have plenty of love to share.

Heart of a home

We find that the kitchen is certainly the heart of our home.  We don't get to spend much time at home, but when we are home (and awake) we are in the kitchen.  When family and friends are over, we end up gathered around the island or the kitchen table.  We picked our floor plan based on the kitchen and how it flows with the rest of the house.  It is my favorite room.

I purchased this for the vent a hood on Etsy.com  It's a 3 part sticker.  I've been asked about it often;  you can purchase one here:

The thing about glitter...

... if you get it on you, be prepared to have it on forever 'cause glitter is the herpes of craft supplies. ~ Demetri Martin

However, I have all my glitter neatly organized and contained in one room of the house (for now).  Inspired by a vendor's organization, Brian and I headed to Ikea to pick up this kids craft storage.  Complimented by some storeage from Michaels, 2 corner bookcases, my old kitchen table and my sewing desk, my craft room feels functional!  And I already have paint on several walls, the door and a few spots on the carpet (but don't tell Brian).  I'm a happy crafter!

Angela's Amazing Talents

I met Angela working at Michaels together.  She left a few years back and became a pastry chef.  And she is AMAZING!!  These are some of the goodies she brought over for my housewarming party!  The chocolate cupcakes had gnoish in the middle, and melted in your mouth!  The attention to detail paired with the excellence in baking makes her treats a huge success!  Not pictured (because I already ate them all) are her sugar cookies and cheesecake bites - also amazing!  We've had all kinds of different treats from her and all of them are wonderful.  If you have an upcoming event, I highly recommend giving her a call.  Website is above.

YUMMY!!

Summers Most Awesome Day!!

To help celebrate summer we rented an adult size inflatable slip N slide.  It was awesome!  I am so sore from my neck to my toes it's not even funny.  They delivered at 9 am and picked up at 9 pm, and we played pretty much the whole day!

setting up!

Ready to go!!

Dad approves!

We are so doing this again next year!

Housewarming

We had our Pastor over on Friday night to bless the house and followed with our housewarming on Saturday.  Surprisingly it was a great way to restock our wine collection!  We had so much fun!  Pictures from the slip N slide will come tomorrow, so watch for them.

We are so blessed to have great friends that are such a joy to be around.  We had about 30 people throughout the day and we are so glad that they made it by.  A house never really feels like a home until it's been shared with the people you love!  I didn't catch pictures of everyone (I didn't want to handle the camera while wet), but here are a few of the people we are blessed to spend our lives with.

The Hamilton's (expecting baby H in Jan).  They are in our small group and we have been so thankful to have them in our lives.  They are amazing friends and will be incredible parents.

Chrissy & Chris
Chrissy brought me vodka, and I'm pretty sure it's because we're soul mates!  LOL!

Angela - she makes the most amazing desserts.  That post to follow too!
Brian is in the background with Carly & Kendal.  The girls had a lot of fun on the slide too and asked their mom if they can rent one for their birthday so that Brian & I can play too.  So cute!

Thanks to all of our friends that came.  Naomi wins the prize for furthest drive - Houston!  We missed a few friends that weren't able to make it, but are so happy that we got to have fun and share our house with all of you.

It's good to be home!

Newest Painting

Brian and I have had no luck finding a piece of art that would work in our living room.  The space is quite large, and since it is open to the kitchen, needed to work with the blues of the kitchen and the browns of the living room.  Armed with a lot of paint, I started on my latest canvas to see if I could help fill the spot.

Above I am set up in my new craft room with blank white staring back.  Below is what I completed with that is now hanging in the living room.

It's the largest piece I have attempted, and hung on the wall.  And I had to turn the flash off on the camera to kill the glare, so it's a little blurry.  But blurry works for this, since it is all blurred together anyway...

Tie Backs

To match the cornice boards, I also made these tie backs for the living room.  Also cut from curtain panels, and I used liquid stitch to seal the edges. The white linen panels are from Pottery Barn.

Cornice Boards

In our last house, I had made cornice boards for the kitchen & living room, and got asked often how to make them.  Since they are so easy (and cheap) I figured when I made these, I would post it up.  Unfortunately for me, I picked a fabric that melted under an iron, so mine are wrinkled and I hope over time they will relax out.

Here's where to start:
- Measure the outside of your window to decide how wide you want these.  I tend to measure the window sill and add 1 inch.
- Pick your fabric and get enough to wrap that length.  I normally buy at a fabric store by the yard, but since I wanted these to match the curtains in the kitchen, I bought 2 extra curtain panels and used those.
- Go to Home Depot and buy a 2x4 that is really nice.  Even a really nice 2x4 is cheap if you just need 1.  They will cut it for you, just tell them how long you want it.
- You also want to pick up L brackets.  The pack I buy is a few bucks and has a 2 inch brace, which is perfect for a 2x4.  4 come in a pack normally, so I did both windows with one pack.
- Get a box.  For these, I had to get a XL box, but just get enough cardboard that when you cut the panels open you can cover your 2x4.  I get mine at Home Depot while I'm there.
- If you don't have one, get a staple gun.  But you should have one.  It's my favorite tool in the garage.
- At your local fabric store, you will need quilt batting.  I got a Queen size one and it was more than enough for these 2, so just buy what you need.
- You also need a hot glue gun, pencil, scissors, and preferred a rotary cutter and packaging tape.

Once home with all the goodies, cut the box panels apart.  I use a Fiskars rotary cutter and lay the box on the 2x4.  I don't have a cutting mat long enough for a whole box, and this keeps me from cutting up the floor or a table.  You could also use scissors, but the rotary is much quicker.

Next, using the natural fold on 2 of the panels, measure the 4 inches up and draw a line with your pencil.  It's much easier to use the natural fold than to try to force fold it.
Staple gun these two panels to the 2x4 as shown above.
Cut a 3rd panel to fit the gap and staple it in place.  I also then use packing tape between each panel to stabilize.

Cover it with quilt batting and cut it down so you have enough excess to wrap over, but not too much to handle.
Using the hot glue gun, secure the batting to the 2x4 and cardboard.  I use my staple gun on the back of the 2x4 to make sure it is really kept in place, but mostly I just like using the staple gun.

Repeat the batting steps with your fabric.  Cut to size, wrap, secure with hot glue.

Attach the brackets to the wall above the window.  Lift and rest the cornice board on the bracket.  I do not attach my cornice boards to the brackets, but if it were hanging above my head I probably would to be on the safe side.  They aren't terrible heavy, but I still would want to make sure it couldn't fall on someone.

Each panel takes about 1 hour to complete when they are as large as what I did, with the first one being a little longer than the 2nd.  The small ones I have done are much quicker.

Happy Window Coverings!

Jersey Shore

During my recent trip to NJ, I was able to visit the Jersey Shore!  It's a little chilly for this Texan, but very nice and I would have loved to just relaxed and watched the water for a while.

We also spent some time house hunting, and I think this is the one.  (by house hunting, I mean me in the back seat of the car on Zillow.com with my jaw on the floor)  I can't buy it, I'm just hoping someone I know will and let me come vacation there.  It's where the river meets the ocean (few miles up) and very peaceful.  You can boat out on the river, including water skiing, and just take a short drive down to the beach.  Plus this one is next to a dock & a great little burger dive.
This is the dock out in front of the house above.

Tim taught me how to eat Steamers!  And they were good!  (not sure why it's so red)
We also ate at a Japanese place that had this hot rock!  They brought out thin strips of beef, that we cooked on the hot rock!  It was an upgrade on fondue for sure!

And of course they took me to get peanut butter ice cream!  I'm not sure why Texans haven't gotten on this band wagon -- it is so good -- but I only seem to find it up north.  Vanilla ice cream with peanut butter swirled through it, hot fudge on top.  It's a little peice of heaven!

Ranger U

A couple weekends ago I attended Ranger U and learned a lot about stamping, painting and a little dabble in mixed media.  A lot of time later, I came home with 75 new techniques to make my crafting a little more advanced!  And it helps me do my job better, so it was well worth the weekend trip up to New Jersey!

Tim Holtz & Claudine Hellmuth were two of our teachers, and I think they are both just so great at what they do.

The first session we did was all about Perfect Pearls.  I've heard of these before, but had never used them.  They are quickly becoming one of my favorite items, since they are just so easy to use to add color to almost anything.

And a shot down my table of everyone working with the paints & stamps.

I would post some of what I did, but since I was most focused on technique and not appearance, most of what I did is "unacceptable".  As I work on other projects, I'll post those.
